Dude Essay

Every week there is a new AI agent framework promising to automate your entire life. The demos are impressive: book my flights, file my taxes, manage my inbox. But the part that still feels unresolved is the ceiling.

Not the technical ceiling. The trust ceiling.

The gap between can do and should let it do is widening, not narrowing. The models get better at reasoning, but reasoning is not the same as judgment. Judgment is contextual. Judgment is knowing when to break the rule because the rule was written for a different situation. Judgment is saying no to a user request because you know something they do not.

And judgment, currently, is not something you can prompt-engineer into existence.

The result is a weird bifurcation: people either trust AI too much, letting it auto-send emails without review, or too little, refusing to let it sort their spam. Neither is optimal. The middle path, scoped autonomy with human checkpoints, sounds obvious but is surprisingly hard to build. It requires the system to know what it does not know, which is one of the hardest things for language models to express reliably.

So where does that leave the personal assistant category? I think the winners will not be the most autonomous agents. They will be the ones that make their uncertainty legible. They ask before acting, explain their reasoning, and let you override without breaking the workflow. The assistant that says, I am 60 percent confident about this, want me to proceed or flag it for later, is more useful than the one that silently gets it wrong.

We are not building toward a world where AI replaces judgment. We are building toward one where AI handles the parts that do not need judgment, so humans have more of it left for the parts that do.

The Dude abides, but asks first. Stay skeptical.
